Professor Jake Kaner is Associate Dean of Research at the School of Art and Design, Nottingham Trent University. He was previously Head of Research and Professor of Furniture at Buckinghamshire New University, and an editorial board member of the Institute of Conservation.
He has particular interests in innovative techniques for furniture conservation and heritage, twentieth century furniture and contemporary furniture design and manufacture. Beginning in 2003 and continuing into 2018 Professor Kaner has produced all of the replica Charles Rennie Mackintosh – designed furniture displayed within the restored 78 Derngate:
In 2017 Professor Kaner returned to 78 Derngate to give a talk during the Centenary events programme, “Making Mackintosh: Making the furniture for 78 Derngate”. He remarked, “the replication of the furniture for 78 Derngate was not a simple task. It revealed many interesting and un-anticipated avenues. The unique and special furniture for both the hall and the guest bedroom was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh with steerage from W.J. Bassett Lowke. Both schemes are quite different and this affected the replication of the furniture.”
